In 2003, the Sam Houston Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Texas, commissioned Wimberley Glass Works
to create a grand Starburst Chandelier to serve as the focal point for the museum's new Katy & E. Don Walker Sr. Education Building.
The chandlier was installed in March 2004, and is now part of the permanent collection of the
museum.
Tim deJong, the artisans at WGW and blacksmith Tom Linning of Wimberley Valley Forge, created the natural iron, bright white and crystal chandelier that spreads approximately 8 feet in diameter and reaches 7.5 feet in height, it weighs in at almost 300 pounds.
Designed to honor Sam Houston and the State of Texas, the chandelier is modeled around two stars - each created with five points. The first, like a sheriff's star, represents Sam Houston, who as Texas' first president, helped establish the foundation for many of the laws we live by today. The second star, like the Lone Star, honors the great State of Texas (or, in Sam Houston's time, the Republic of Texas). Smaller versions here.
The Sam Houston Starburst Chandelier may be seen during museum visiting hours
from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 4:30 pm on Sunday.
